On
Wednesday November 4th (8:00 - 9:00 PM), parents/guardians, students,
teachers, and members of our community have a unique opportunity to
participate in a live video conference on the topic of Internet
Safety. This event will take place in the Morristown Central School Library and will be use
the district's PolyCom Videoconferencing machine. Participants will
interact live with experts on Internet Safety in the state of Missouri
where they can see and speak with them just like television news
anchors interact with reporters "in the field". Anyone attending this
event is encouraged to prepare questions about Internet Safety to ask
the experts.
There is no doubt we now live in an “Internet Age.” At the click of a
mouse, you can e-mail hundreds of people simultaneously, buy that
long-desired vintage automobile, or create a personal profile to share
with the world. With unlimited opportunities, cyberspace may well have
become the new “final frontier.” How best can we explore this frontier?
How can we minimize risk and maximize safety? How can we help families
be secure in their Internet activities? These are important questions,
and we invite parents and their children to participate in this
important discussion as part of Internet Safety Night.
Hosted this year by parents at St. Clement School in Des Peres,
Missouri, Internet Safety Night is a nationwide event that brings
information and resources to students, parents and members of the
community to help us all stay safer online. Your group of parents and
community members is invited to join via videoconference to interact
with Lt. Joe Laramie, Director of Missouri’s Internet Crimes Against
Children Task Force; Cherisse Thibault, Missouri KidsFirst; and Justin
Glick, Missouri Attorney General’s Office.
Topics will include online predators, cyber-bullying, identity theft
and other Internet-related issues “This is such an important issue – it
is absolutely critical for kids, parents and community members to be on
the same page with regard to online safety,” said Randy Raw, Manager of
Network Security at MOREnet. “The Internet is a fantastic learning
tool, but like any tool, people need to understand what the risks are
and how to use it safely.”
