POTSDAM, NY - SUNY Potsdam student and
Clarkson Army ROTC Cadet Justin Westbrook of Calcium recently was presented the
Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude Memorial Fund Scholarship at the Annual Association
of the United States Army (AUSA) Convention held in Washington, D.C. The $2,000 scholarship was
established in honor of the highest-ranking officer killed in the 9/11 attack
on the Pentagon. The scholarship presented at the Annual ROTC Luncheon is
awarded to two Green to Gold Cadets nationally. General Maude’s widow, Teri,
and daughter, Karen presented Westbrook with the award at the luncheon. The
Maude Foundation and the AUSA paid for the four-day trip for Westbrook; his
wife, Leisa; and sons, Reagan and Carter. During his trip to Washington
D.C., Westbrook had the opportunity to attend the AUSA Convention, do a lot of
site seeing and meet several of the Army’s senior leaders, including the army
chief of staff and secretary of the army. Lt. Gen. Maude, a three-star
general, was deputy chief of staff for personnel for the U.S. Army. At the time
of his death he was working on Green to Gold, a program that allows active duty
enlisted soldiers the opportunity to attend college and be commissioned as
officers through the Army ROTC Program.
With the support of Lt. Gen.
Maude’s family and the Army Chief of Staff, the memorial scholarship fund has
been established in General Maude’s honor to continue his efforts to “take care
of soldiers.” The memorial fund will provide resources to assist soldiers
enrolled in the U.S. Army’s Green to Gold program. Westbrook is currently a senior
economics major. Prior to selection for the Green to Gold program, Westbrook
served in the U.S. Army for six years. His last duty was serving with the
Second Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, as an Arabic Linguist in
the Second Brigade Special Troops Battalion. Westbrook has served as an
Arabic Linguist at Fort Hood, TX, and Fort Drum. After graduation next May,
Westbrook plans to commission as a Military Intelligence Officer.
